Gavin W Britz MD, MPH, MBA, FAANS: Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery, Houston Methodist, Houston Texas; Professor of Neurological Surgery, Cornell Medical College, New York

Dr Britz leads an acclaimed team of neurosurgeons and affiliated professionals and is recognized as one of the nation's foremost cerebrovascular, skull base and brain tumor surgeons. Britz obtained his medical degree from the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa in 1987. Dr. Britz then completed his fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore in June 1993. This was then followed specialty training in Neurological Surgery at the University of Washington in Seattle from July 1993 – June 2002. During July 1998 – June 1999 he spent a year at Atkinson Morley`s Hospital, St George`s Medical School, The University of London as a Registrar and Senior Registrar in Neurological Surgery. In addition Dr. Britz obtained his Masters in Public Health with an emphasis on Epidemiology from the University of Washington in 2003. Dr. Britz also underwent further specialty training at the University of Washington in Seattle in Cerebrovascular Surgery and Interventional Neuroradiology which he completed in January of 2003. Dr. Britz then served on faculty at the University of Washington from January 2003 to December 2007 at which time he relocated to lead the Cerebrovascular Center at Duke University Medical Center. In 2013 he was recruited to lead the Department of Neurosurgery at Houston Methodist where he currently practices. He also received a MBA from George Washington University in 2015.

He has received Best Doctor in America distinction six different years. He is on the advisory boards of the Joe Niekro Foundation and The Brain Aneurysm Foundation and serves on the editorial board for Neurosurgery, World Neurosurgery, International Journal of Vascular Medicine, Surgical Neurology International, SOJ Neurology and Dataset Papers in Medicine. He has authored more than 120 peer reviewed scientific manuscripts, 33 chapters and is the Editor of two neurosurgical text books with another two underway....

Dr. Britz practice largely focuses on the treatment of disorders of the cerebrovascular system and brain tumors including complex tumors around the skull base. This includes; 1. Brain aneurysms, microsurgical clipping or coiling / embolization, 2. Brain AVMS, either embolization, microsurgical removal or radiosurgical treatment. 3. Carotid Disease, carotid endarterectomy or stenting. 4. Moya Moya disease with microsurgical bypasses. 5. Spinal AVMs / Fistula with embolization and or microsurgical removal. 6. Meningiomas, 7. Chordomas, 8.  Pituitary tumors, 9. Acoustic neuromas, 10. Craniopharyngiomas. 11. Glioblastomas. 12. Gliomas

Dr. Britz`s experience allows him to treat the most complex brain aneurysms and brain tumors including those that require cardiac standstill or complex bypasses. Dr. Britz is also actively involved in research in both basic science and clinical. Dr. Britz laboratory focuses on understanding the mechanisms involved in the causes of strokes and poor outcomes following ruptured aneurysms and his clinical research is evaluating new and novel tools to treat a wide variety of problems such as brain aneurysm and brain tumors.
